WHAT:  Spitball Media Pop-Up Studio Gallery Opening
WHEN:  First Thursday, August 5, 2010
WHERE:  925 NW Lovejoy St (@10th ave) in Portlandʼs Pearl District

Spitball Media, a Portland-based video production company, is opening a pop-up gallery in a store-front retail space in Portlandʼs Pearl District, and has moved its creative production studio to the new location.

In early 2010, Spitball Media began to seek pop-up gallery opportunities. The idea was inspired by a trend in New York and London, of commercial artists leasing retail spaces that were otherwise sitting empty due to the down economy.

In such situations, the tenant pays a reduced rental fee on a short-term lease. The developer benefits from having hard costs (insurance, property tax , etc) covered, and some positive activity in the space.

“Pop-up leasing provides a great way to bring energy and attract attention to an otherwise vacant space, while still marketing the space to the broader tenant community.”, says Charlotte Larson of Urban Works Real Estate, who brokered the deal between Spitball Media and the developer, the Housing Authority of Portland.

Spitball Media is not a retail business, but benefits from exposure with street-facing windows in a high traffic area. "This location will give us an opportunity to showcase some of the art- based, media installation work that we do to a broad audience, including those who come to the Pearl District specifically to view art." says creative director Andrew Wade Smith.

The studio will be open on First Thursdays, Portlandʼs monthly gallery crawl, beginning August 5th. “Historically weʼve had 4 - 6 events a year in our studio anyway, so this is a natural progression for us to have a monthly gallery event,” says Spitball principal, Joe Lesher.

Spitball Media enjoys a marketing partnership with InFocus, a digital display technology company headquartered in Portland. New technology from InFocus will be utilized for the August 5th opening, and for an on-going street-facing window display. “Spitball Media is a fantastic partner. They really know how to get the most out of InFocus digital displays,” says Scott Niesen, InFocus Director of Marketing.
